Thorns
A SCAD Collaborative Project
A Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) sponsored animated collaborative film, concept created by Marissa Montero, completed in May 2019. Thorns is traditionally animated using TVPaint. It features Kobi, a small mythical creature called a “seedling”, who needs to overcome his fears to defeat a thorned monster in order to save the forest.
Development Roles
2D Animation
Served as 2D animator throughout the duration of production. Responsible for all stages; keyframing, in-betweening, and cleanup.
Production manager
Handled scheduling and keeping track of progress within the film.
Cut Content
Oil on Glass Animation
Very early on we experimented with different potential animation styles, including differing frame rates. One such style that came from this was Oil Paint on Glass, which I completed a proof of concept for (seen above). We cut this content due to it not fitting stylistically to the rest of the film.
2D Toonboom Harmony Rigs
During the pre-production stage of development, there was a section with many background characters that we decided would probably be more efficient if done using rigging/puppets, however due to the crew’s overall unfamiliarity with the program, it was cut and the section was instead done traditionally. I created and tested puppets prior to their removal from the film.
